We get back to the college by late afternoon. Denver follows me inside. We walk by a frowning Greg. I feel so awful. Denver doesn’t move an inch as he stares Greg down. Greg stares at me like Denver’s not there. “Ciara, where have you been? I’ve been so worried.”

Denver smirks. “She’s been with me. She’s fine.”

I throw a hand against Denver’s chest. Greg blinks at the motion. I drop my hand. “He’s with me to keep me safe.” I beg Greg with my eyes to accept my answer.

He frowns. “Well, I came by to remind you of your finals; so you don’t forget them.” Greg steps closer and takes my hand. “We had plans, Ciara. Don’t forget that.”

I drop my hand from Greg’s. I feel like I’m betraying Denver by touching Greg. I feel like I’m betraying Greg by walking in with Denver. My head wants to explode. “I haven’t forgotten, Greg. I won’t miss a final.” My voice sounds so formal. “Thank you for stopping by to check on me.”

The RA’s window must be open because I hear a snort coming from her direction. Greg’s eyes fly to her window and then back to me. I narrow my gaze. “What was that about?”

His look of innocence feels practiced. “What do you mean?”

I feel bad. What am I doing accusing him of something when I’ve been all over Denver, and he’s been all over me. “Nothing, Greg. I’m just tired. I’m going to get some sleep.”

Greg glances at Denver. “Where’s he staying?”

I open my mouth to answer. “In her room. I’m staying in her room.” Denver’s answer makes me blush to my roots. I can hardly look Greg in the eye.

His jaw drops. “How is he staying in your room, Ciara?”

“Do you really have to ask that, Greg?” I whip around to face the RA. I didn’t know she knew Greg’s first name; and why is she asking him this strange question?

I look back at Greg, who looks all flustered. “I’m going to go now, Ciara. Take care of yourself.”

Denver gives him a little wave. “Bye, Greg.”

Denver throws an arm around me and pulls me close. He kisses me on the head. I throw an elbow in his ribs. He doesn’t give an inch. “Let’s go little Yengst. I’ll take good care of you.” His words sound all fatherly, but his body language and tone say something else.

I walk down the hallway beside him, hating the hurt I saw on Greg’s face before he went outside. Still, I can’t shake my RA’s words. How does she know Greg, and what does she mean? She almost made it sound like he’s stayed here before, but whose room would he be in, because it wasn’t mine. I put my key in the door absentmindedly. Denver pushes past me and throws open closet doors and the bathroom. He looks at me. “It’s all clear. You can come in.”

I walk in and sit down in my fuzzy chair. Denver lays down on my bed.
